Nikita Tszyu has addressed a long-running misconception about his boxing upbringing just days before his May 6 bout against Oscar Diaz in Sydney, making it clear that his development did not come from his famous father Kostya Tszyu but from his uncle and trainer Igor Goloubev. The rising Australian contender also explained why he is not rushing toward a world title despite growing hype, saying patience will shape his path and that his team, not outside pressure, will decide when he is ready.
Tszyu clarifies training roots
Speaking before the fight, Tszyu said: “Because there’s a misconception out there that my dad taught us to box. But, no, it’s my uncle. He’s been there since day one”.
That bond remains central to his career decisions. “I’ll be ready when my uncle says I’m ready,” he added.
No rush toward world title
Despite talk of quick title opportunities, Tszyu admitted: “I don’t think so, no. I’ve still got a lot to learn before I go charging for a world title.”
He expects that shot in “two, maybe three years”, preferring steady progress over hype.
