The Los Angeles Dodgers have been dealt a major bullpen setback after closer Edwin Díaz was placed on the injured list with a right elbow issue. The club announced on Monday that Díaz is expected to miss around three months after surgery to remove “loose bodies” from the joint. The injury matters because Díaz was signed to anchor the Dodgers late in games, and now Los Angeles must adjust during a key stretch of the 2026 MLB season.
Dodgers Confirm Edwin Díaz Injury Blow
Díaz joined the Dodgers this offseason on a three-year, $69 million deal after his long run with the New York Mets. He arrived with high expectations as one of baseball’s top relievers, but his start in Los Angeles has been uneven.
In seven appearances this season, Díaz recorded four saves but also one blown save. His ERA rose to 10.50 after difficult recent outings, including a blown three-run lead against the Texas Rangers and another rough appearance against the Colorado Rockies.
The Dodgers announced they have recalled left-hander Jake Eder to help cover the roster move.
What It Means for Los Angeles
Bullpen depth often decides close games, especially in October races. Losing a proven closer for months creates pressure on the rest of the relief staff. Managerial decisions in the ninth inning now become a bigger talking point.
The crowd reaction around Dodger Stadium is likely mixed. Fans know Díaz’s talent, but they also saw his recent struggles. If the bullpen responds well, this could simply be a temporary obstacle. If not, late-game nerves may grow quickly.
Can the Dodgers Stay on Track?
Los Angeles still has enough talent to remain among MLB contenders, but replacing elite experience is never simple. The next few weeks will show whether internal options can steady the bullpen until Díaz returns after the All-Star break.
