World Cup final petition signatures reportedly passed 80,000 after Argentina fans demanded a replay of their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
The campaign, attributed in reports to Gisela Sanchez, claims decisions by referee Slavko Vincic affected the match. It asks FIFA to review the final, although no verified evidence establishing match-changing misconduct has been presented.
The reaction forms part of a wider debate around Argentina, after backlash grew among Black Americans during the World Cup final.
Why Argentina Fans Want a Replay
Euronews reported more than 80,700 signatures after earlier totals placed the campaign above 60,000.
The frustration followed a tense final that remained goalless through 90 minutes. Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to secure Spain’s second men’s World Cup title.
For many Argentina supporters, the petition offers an outlet after a painful defeat and the possibility that Lionel Messi has played his final international match. It does not alter the official result.
Can FIFA Order a Replay?
An online petition has no binding power over FIFA or the outcome of a completed match. FIFA has not announced a replay or any process that could overturn Spain’s victory.
The official FIFA match report records Spain as 1-0 winners after extra time. Without an official finding that meets FIFA’s rules for further action, the result will stand regardless of the signature total.
