Cameron Munster is in early talks with the PNG Chiefs over a possible 2028 move, with Melbourne Storm allowing the five-eighth to discuss the option before the November 1 transfer window opens.
The 31-year-old is contracted through 2027, while an extension that keeps him at Melbourne Storm remains possible.
The talks follow Gehamat Shibasaki joining Perth Bears in a major double signing as expansion clubs compete for proven talent.
PNG Chiefs Interest Confirmed
Player agent Braith Anasta confirmed the approach but made clear that no agreement had been reached.
“There is a level of interest from PNG,” Braith Anasta said. “We have been in constant communication with Melbourne and Melbourne have the greatest of respect for Cam.
“We have had some dialogue with PNG but remain completely open to Cameron finishing his career at Melbourne.”
Tax-free salaries are part of the PNG Chiefs’ pitch, and Cameron Munster could visit Port Moresby.
Injury Shapes Immediate Focus
Cameron Munster is recovering from surgery on a cartilage injury in his knee and is expected to miss at least four to six weeks, according to the official Melbourne Storm injury update.
The Queensland captain won NRL premierships with Melbourne Storm in 2017 and 2020, has 15 Australia appearances and a World Cup title, and is a three-time Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year.
PNG Chiefs Build for 2028
The PNG Chiefs have already secured Jarome Luai, Alex Johnston and Connor Watson, while Zac Lomax and Joey Manu have also been linked with the new club.
Jarome Luai will join Parramatta Eels in 2027 before moving to Papua New Guinea for the PNG Chiefs’ NRL debut.
