Javon Andrews is set to make his NRL debut for the Wests Tigers against the Canberra Raiders on Saturday at GIO Stadium. The 19-year-old's selection comes five years after a serious neck injury left doctors warning that he might never play again.
Javon Andrews fractured his C4 and C5 vertebrae after being tackled head-first into a goalpost while representing Logan Brothers in 2021. He spent three weeks in hospital, wore a halo brace for several months and returned to rugby league in early 2023 after about 30 months out.
His selection comes during a testing period for Sydney clubs, with Jason Ryles facing scrutiny as the Parramatta Eels continue to slide.
Javon Andrews Defies Medical Warning
"I was very young and doctors said I couldn’t play again, so it’s been a long journey," Javon Andrews said.
Psychological support helped Javon Andrews rebuild trust in his body before his first matches back. He also credited his parents, older brother and younger sister with helping him through the lengthy recovery.
"It was a tough time but my mum and dad just helped me through it. I’m truly grateful for them," Javon Andrews said.
Reserve-Grade Form Earns Opportunity
The Wests Tigers' official selection update confirms Javon Andrews leads the NSW Cup with 23 try assists and 25 line-break assists. Benji Marshall named the Queensland playmaker at halfback after strong form for the Western Suburbs Magpies.
Javon Andrews also helped Queensland win the 2025 Under-19 State of Origin title and was named player of the match. His passing and ability to create space will be tested against an experienced Canberra Raiders defence.
The Wests Tigers will initially carry Javon Andrews on a development contract before promoting him to their top-30 roster for the next two seasons.
