Argentina soccer criticism grew after several players clashed with Spain following Sunday’s 1-0 extra-time defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at New York/New Jersey Stadium. The scenes renewed debate about the team’s physical style and conduct in defeat.
Leandro Paredes confronted Eric Garcia before becoming involved in another exchange as players from both teams arrived. Thiago Almada also entered the confrontation, while Leandro Paredes received a red card after the final whistle.
The disorder followed the match in which Ferran Torres fired Spain past Argentina to win the 2026 World Cup.
Nahuel Molina appeared to strike out at Spain captain Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante as the Spanish substitutes entered the field to celebrate. Most Argentina players later faced their own supporters while Spain lifted the trophy, which some viewers viewed as disrespectful.
Spain defender Aymeric Laporte had already questioned Argentina’s physical approach during the tournament. “Especially with Argentina, who are a team that leave a lot of little messages with their challenges.”
Some online critics have also repeated unproven claims that referees favour Lionel Messi. Separate reports of alleged racist abuse involving a minority of Argentina supporters have added to the anger, though those accusations should not be applied to the entire fan base or national team.
Argentina still commands a huge global following, led by supporters of Lionel Messi and admirers of the team’s 2022 World Cup victory. The recent criticism is therefore not universal, but the post-final clashes gave detractors fresh material.
