Jude Bellingham was filmed striking Argentina substitute Valentín Barco on the back of the head after England’s 2-1 FIFA World Cup semi-final defeat at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. New footage has provided earlier context to the confrontation, although it does not excuse the physical contact.
The video shows Valentín Barco leaving the Argentina bench after Enzo Fernández scored the equaliser. Rather than joining his teammates, the unused substitute ran toward England’s players and celebrated directly in front of them.
The confrontation followed a difficult night for England, with Thomas Tuchel facing backlash after the World Cup collapse.
Anthony Gordon had given England the lead in the 55th minute before Enzo Fernández equalised after 85 minutes. Lautaro Martínez then scored in stoppage time to send Argentina into the final against Spain, as recorded by the official FIFA match centre.
Jude Bellingham appeared deeply frustrated after the final whistle and later became involved in the exchange with Valentín Barco. Argentina players confronted the England midfielder after the contact.
Fresh footage of the earlier celebration has divided supporters over whether Valentín Barco deliberately provoked England’s players. A social media fan account wrote: “This is (Barco) celebrating the goal in their faces but we’re supposed to believe he was completely unprovoked and didn’t say a single thing ... Alright man,”
Other viewers argued that a provocative celebration did not justify Jude Bellingham’s response. The available footage shows the earlier incident but does not confirm what was said between the players or establish a direct cause for the later confrontation.
Jude Bellingham had been one of England’s leading performers during the tournament, but the incident added further controversy to a painful semi-final exit. No disciplinary decision was included in the original report.
