Thomas Tuchel has pledged to remain England manager despite reports that players were confused by his tactical changes during Wednesday’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina at Atlanta Stadium. The loss ended England’s title bid and placed the manager’s decision-making under heavy scrutiny.
Anthony Gordon gave England a second-half lead before Argentina scored twice late in the match. Thomas Tuchel attempted to protect the advantage by introducing Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly.
Argentina’s comeback featured another influential display from Cristian Romero on the World Cup stage.
Reports claimed several England players struggled to understand their positions after Declan Rice was replaced by Nico O’Reilly. Jude Bellingham was seen gesturing toward teammates as England’s shape became increasingly unclear.
Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins and Noni Madueke remained unused despite Argentina leaving space behind their defence. Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney were introduced only after Lautaro Martínez had completed Argentina’s comeback.
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni responded to England’s defensive substitutions by removing Nicolás Tagliafico and adding Lautaro Martínez. Enzo Fernández equalised from an area that Declan Rice had previously protected before Lautaro Martínez struck in stoppage time.
Thomas Tuchel insisted he remains committed to the position. “100 per cent, and there’s still enough to improve, still enough to improve and I’m more than happy to do that.”
The Football Association’s official contract announcement confirms Thomas Tuchel is signed through UEFA Euro 2028.
Thomas Tuchel argued that England became too passive and could not retain possession once Argentina increased the pressure. He suggested England lacked the natural habit of controlling matches through the ball.
“We couldn’t find any duels anymore; that’s why we dropped deeper and deeper. It was never the plan, but it happened.”
England will finish their tournament against France in Saturday’s third-place playoff in Miami.
