Giannis Antetokounmpo joined the Miami Heat from the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster trade completed on June 22, 2026. The deal ended his 13-season stay in Milwaukee and placed Miami firmly in the NBA championship race, but at a steep long-term cost.
The Miami Heat received Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. while sending Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis to the Milwaukee Bucks. Milwaukee also acquired the 13th pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, unprotected first-round selections in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick.
The move came as Miami also monitored another superstar situation, with a LeBron James decision approaching amid Heat interest.

Giannis Antetokounmpo leaves the Milwaukee Bucks after winning the 2021 NBA championship and two MVP awards. His relationship with the organisation deteriorated after he disputed the decision to sideline him for the final 15 games of the season because of a knee issue.
The Miami Heat defeated a rival offer from the Boston Celtics, whose proposal reportedly centred on Jaylen Brown and two unprotected first-round picks. Boston declined to include more young players.
Pairing Giannis Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo gives Miami an imposing frontcourt built around interior scoring, rebounding and defence. However, losing Tyler Herro removes an established perimeter scorer, while the departures of Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakučionis reduce the supporting depth.
Giannis Antetokounmpo turns 32 in December, and Miami now holds fewer assets for future trades. The Heat have acquired an elite player, but anything short of a serious championship run will place the price under sharp examination.
