A Historic Debut and Fresh Thursday Night Hoops
The entry of the Tasmania Jewels marks a massive milestone for the competition. Owned by the NBL’s Tasmania JackJumpers, the Jewels will hit the court for their debut game against the Geelong Venom on October 15. This historic moment brings elite women's basketball back to the Apple Isle for the first time since the Hobart Islanders folded in 1996.
To fit the extra team into the calendar, the league is moving away from its traditional weekend blocks. Fans can now look forward to regular Thursday night games supplementing the usual Friday through Sunday and Tuesday slots. The energy in the arenas is bound to shift with this constant stream of weekday basketball, keeping the momentum rolling across a massive 16-round, 99-match regular season.
Playoff Shake-up: The Fight for the Top Five
The most significant competitive change is the altered path to the trophy. Instead of the traditional top-four semi-finals, five teams will now qualify for the postseason.
The New Postseason Bracket
The Elimination Final: A sudden-death, one-off clash between the fourth and fifth-placed teams.
The Semi-Finals: The winner of the elimination game advances to play the minor premiers (first place) for a spot in the decider.
The Second Bracket: The second and third-placed teams face off directly for the remaining grand final berth.
Round One Blockbusters
The opening weekend is packed with drama. Fans will witness an immediate grand final rematch when the Perth Lynx host the reigning champions, Townsville Fire. Additionally, star player Jade Melbourne returns to Canberra to face her former side, the UC Capitals, after signing a blockbuster deal with the Bendigo Spirit.
The schedule also confirms that HoopsFest will take over Perth's RAC Arena from January 13 to 17, creating a festival atmosphere alongside the men's league before the regular season concludes on January 31.
Chief Operating Officer Justin Nelson noted that the league prioritized blockbuster matchups to capitalize on last year's surging attendance. "We have the Jewels joining, some big names returning and some fresh faces that will take things up another level on and off the court," he said. "We've prioritised blockbuster match-ups and maximised the opportunities for supporters to see their teams live with some new fan-friendly tip-off times."
