Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup exit came in emotional fashion after Portugal lost 1-0 to Spain in their FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash on Tuesday morning AEST.
Mikel Merino scored in stoppage time to send Spain through, ending Ronaldo’s final World Cup campaign and leaving Portugal to face heavy scrutiny over how the 41-year-old was used.
The result came after another major knockout shock, with USA vs Belgium ending in a heavy USMNT defeat after Matt Freese’s costly error.
Sutton Slams Portugal Decision
Ronaldo scored three goals at the tournament, but his wider performances drew strong criticism as Portugal exited early.
Former England striker Chris Sutton blamed manager Roberto Martinez for keeping Ronaldo on the field.
“He’s waddling around the field like a grandad, that’s why Portugal are out,” Sutton said on BBC.
“Cristiano Ronaldo does nothing; he did nothing.
“What is Roberto Martinez doing? How can you pander to a player so much?
“Portugal are out because of Roberto Martinez.”
Ronaldo Leaves Door Open
Ronaldo leaves the World Cup stage as the all-time leader in men’s international goals with 146 and appearances with 233.
He said Spain had “a bit of luck” with the late goal, but refused to make an immediate call on his Portugal future.
“I’m sad to be leaving the World Cup like this,” the superstar said.
“I gave it my all. I did my best and I’m leaving with a clear conscience. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won’t be making any rash decisions.”
“I don’t make decisions in the heat of the moment,” he said.
Portugal Era Reaches Turning Point
Ronaldo, who helped Portugal win the 2016 European Championship and the Nations League in 2019 and 2025, said he was proud of his national-team career.
“I’ve won three titles for Portugal; before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal hadn’t won a single title,” the Al-Nassr forward said.
He also thanked Martinez, who departed as manager after Portugal’s exit.
“I loved working with him,” he added.
