Portugal vs Spain history will add another layer of tension when the Iberian rivals meet in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at AT&T Stadium on Monday.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lamine Yamal headline a knockout match between two unbeaten teams, with a quarter-final place waiting for the winner.
The latest World Cup rivalry clash comes during a tournament full of major storylines, including Erling Haaland’s form and rising injury concerns across the knockout stage.
Spain Hold Head-To-Head Edge
Portugal and Spain have met 41 times since 1921, with Spain winning 17 matches, Portugal winning six and 18 ending in draws.
In competitive fixtures across the World Cup, European Championship and Nations League, Spain have six wins, Portugal have one and five matches have been drawn.
Spain’s biggest win in the rivalry was a 9-0 victory in Madrid during 1934 World Cup qualifying.
Ronaldo is the top active scorer in the fixture with four goals, adding more focus to what could be his final World Cup meeting with Spain.
World Cup Meetings Remain Rare
Portugal and Spain have met six times in World Cup competition, including qualifying matches.
Spain have won twice, four games have been drawn and Portugal are still chasing a first World Cup-level win in the fixture.
Only two meetings have come at the finals.
Spain won 1-0 in the 2010 Round of 16 through David Villa before going on to lift the trophy, while the 2018 group-stage meeting ended 3-3 after Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in Sochi.
How They Reached The Knockouts
Spain have been one of the strongest sides at the 2026 World Cup.
La Roja drew 0-0 with Cape Verde, beat Saudi Arabia 4-0 and Uruguay 1-0, then defeated Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 behind a Mikel Oyarzabal brace.
Spain have not conceded a goal at this tournament.
Portugal drew with DR Congo and Colombia, beat Uzbekistan 5-0 and then edged Croatia 2-1 through a stoppage-time Goncalo Ramos header, with Ronaldo also scoring.
Official tournament updates are available through FIFA.
