Djed Spence jaw brace questions have followed England during the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the Tottenham Hotspur fullback wearing facial protection after suffering a broken jaw before the tournament.
The injury has not stopped Spence from playing on football’s biggest stage, but the brace is being used to protect his jaw while he continues his recovery.
The England camp has already had plenty of drama in the knockout stage, including Harry Kane’s penalty twist fuelling Mexico’s comeback against England.
Why Spence Is Wearing Protection
Spence broke his jaw in May while playing for Tottenham Hotspur against Chelsea in the English Premier League.
The defender was caught by an elbow from Liam Delap during the match, but still managed to finish the game.
Remarkably, Spence was back on the bench as a substitute just five days later.
With a broken jaw often requiring a long recovery period, the brace gives him added protection while still allowing him to compete.
How The Brace Helps Him Play
The protective gear is a custom-molded carbon-fiber shield built to absorb contact and cover the jawline.
The Mirror reported: "The mask is a custom-molded, carbon-fiber shield designed specifically to absorb shocks and protect his healing bone. It covers his jawline, allowing him to confidently head the ball and engage in physical duels."
For a fullback, that matters. Spence still has to challenge in the air, defend one-on-one and handle contact in wide areas.
It may not look comfortable, but the brace lets him stay available for England at the tournament.
Big Stage For Spurs Defender
This World Cup is the biggest stage of Spence’s career so far.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender has had to balance risk and ambition, but his decision to play shows how much the England opportunity means.
Official tournament updates are available through FIFA.
