The Perth Bears salary cap concessions plan is set to become one of the biggest rule changes in recent NRL history after reports emerged on June 24 that the league's incoming 18th franchise will receive financial assistance to help attract star players. The move matters because the Bears have struggled to secure marquee signings ahead of their entry into the competition, while future rivals such as the PNG Chiefs will benefit from tax-free contracts.
Bears Given New Recruiting Advantage
According to reports, existing Bears sponsors will be allowed to contribute up to 20 per cent of a player's contract from next season. No other NRL club currently receives a similar benefit, making it a historic first for the competition.
The concession pool will reportedly be capped at $500,000 per season, with no limit on the number of players who can receive assistance. The arrangement is expected to run for three years.
The Bears have already missed out on several high-profile targets, including Jayden Campbell, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Cam Munster, all of whom chose to remain with their current clubs.
Tigers Secure Jake Averillo on Long-Term Deal
In other NRL news, the Wests Tigers confirmed the signing of Jake Averillo from the Dolphins on a four-year contract beginning in 2027.
“We’re really pleased to have Jake join us from next season on a long-term deal. He’s a very talented player who will add a lot to our team,” Marshall said via a club-issued statement.
“Jake will bring plenty of strengths to our squad including speed and creativity to our centres and also cover multiple positions.
“After speaking with Jake, I loved his character and confidence, he’ll fit right into what we’re building here at the Wests Tigers.”
Averillo is currently recovering from a hand injury but is expected to return through Queensland Cup action this weekend.
