Victor Wembanyama watched another championship celebration from the other side on Sunday after the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to secure their first NBA title in 53 years. The loss marked another painful moment for the French superstar, whose strong finals performances were not enough to prevent New York's historic triumph.
Wembanyama's Strong Finals Not Enough
The Spurs star averaged 26 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game throughout the series. However, key late-game moments proved costly, including a turnover in Game 2 and two missed free throws during San Antonio's dramatic Game 4 collapse.
"He's definitely the future of this league, man," Knicks legend Larry Johnson said when asked about Wembanyama. "He's a heck of a ball player."
Future Still Bright for Spurs Star
At just 22, Wembanyama has already earned Defensive Player of the Year honours and a First Team All-NBA selection. His championship quest continues, but history shows many NBA legends needed years before lifting the trophy.
