The road to the Socceroos 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign officially begins this week as the first wave of Australian stars arrives in Sarasota, Florida.
Head coach Tony Popovic has selected an initial group of eight players to kick off a high stakes training camp designed to narrow down his final tournament roster.
While these players focus on the men's national team, Australian football fans are also celebrating as Sam Kerr becomes Chelsea's all time leading scorer in the WSL.
Early Arrivals and Roster Battles
Harry Souttar and Hayden Matthews lead the overseas contingent joining A-League Men standouts like Anthony Caceres and Mathew Leckie in the United States.
Tony Popovic is using this period to evaluate a train-on squad before he must submit his definitive 26-man list to FIFA by the start of June.
Coach and Player Reactions
Tony Popovic emphasized that the coming weeks are vital for those hoping to secure a seat on the plane for the tournament.
“I am looking forward to departing for the United States this week to begin our FIFA World Cup 2026 preparations, starting with our pre-camp in Sarasota,” Popovic told the media on Monday.
“The aim is to have as many players as possible available and in contention before finalising our World Cup squad, we are required to make that decision by June 1 and that remains the most important day from a selection perspective.”
Upcoming Matches and Tournament Opener
The squad will eventually shift to Los Angeles to face Mexico at the Rose Bowl on May 30, followed by a clash with Switzerland in San Diego.
These friendlies serve as the final tactical tune-ups before Australia faces Türkiye in their Group D opener in Vancouver on June 13.
Fans can stay updated with the latest roster movements and match statistics on the official Socceroos website.
