The Argentina comeback against England carried the defending champions into another FIFA World Cup final after a dramatic 2-1 victory at Atlanta Stadium. Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez scored late goals as Lionel Messi created both to keep Argentina’s title defence alive.
Argentina will now face Spain after surviving another knockout match in which elimination appeared close. The victory also continued a tournament run built on late recoveries, strong teamwork and a refusal to accept defeat.

Argentina Supporters Take Over Atlanta
England supporters sang before kickoff as their team prepared for its biggest match in recent years, but Argentina’s larger fan contingent controlled the noise inside Atlanta Stadium. Their singing continued through a tense opening period filled with confrontations and complaints toward the referee.
The rivalry remained heated without losing its sporting edge. Players challenged each other physically, while supporters exchanged barbs around the stadium before and during the match.
England eventually took the lead and appeared to have found a path into the final. Instead of pressing for another goal, England dropped deeper and allowed Argentina to move higher up the pitch.
The change was clear from the stands as Argentina’s supporters responded to every attack with louder singing. England’s players began to tire, while Argentina found more space around the penalty area.
Lionel Messi Creates the Winning Moments
Lionel Messi played a direct part in both goals after England had kept him quiet for long periods. His movement drew defenders away from dangerous areas and created openings for Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez.
Enzo Fernández equalised with a fine finish before Lautaro Martínez completed the turnaround. Lionel Messi found Lautaro Martínez with a carefully measured cross that England’s retreating defence could not stop.
The two assists showed why Lionel Messi remains so hard to contain at 39. England limited his involvement for much of the match, but could not prevent him from controlling the moments that decided the result.
Argentina’s players also kept their shape while pushing more bodies forward. The team attacked with confidence without completely abandoning its defensive responsibilities.
Lionel Scaloni Praises Argentina Belief
Argentina have now survived four difficult knockout matches during the tournament. Their ability to recover has become a defining feature of a campaign in which every match has appeared capable of turning against them.
“I think that this team plays the best when we are facing a difficult situation with adversity,” Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said.
“After they scored, we really proved ourselves. It shows what football is to us, which is something that goes beyond tactics.”
Lionel Scaloni believed the final stages showed the full range of Argentina’s football. His players attacked in numbers, scored twice and then protected their lead through the closing minutes.
“It’s what we showed in the last 40 minutes when we scored that second one. We also had to defend and we did so.”
Supporters Drive Another Recovery
Argentina’s supporters briefly fell quiet after England scored, but the reaction did not last. As Argentina increased the pressure, the fans sensed another comeback and filled Atlanta Stadium with chanting.
The celebrations continued after the final whistle as players dropped to the ground and embraced each other. Similar scenes followed in Buenos Aires, Miami and Melbourne as supporters marked another escape from elimination.
Lionel Messi urged the crowd to praise his teammates rather than focusing only on him. His two assists decided the match, but Argentina’s captain viewed the victory as another product of the team’s collective effort.
“What else does he have to do to be the best player of all time? There is already no doubt about it,” Lionel Scaloni said.
Spain Await in World Cup Final
Spain reached the final by defeating France with a controlled performance, while Argentina’s path has been far less comfortable. The defending champions have repeatedly found ways to survive when their tournament appeared close to ending.
Argentina will need another strong performance against a Spain team capable of controlling possession and breaking through defensive lines. Lionel Scaloni’s players will arrive with confidence built through a series of difficult knockout matches.
“No matter who it hurts or what they say, today once again we place ourselves among the two best in the world, and that shows that everything we did is not by chance and that no one gave us anything,” Lionel Messi said.
“This group, when they come together, brings out something special … and they play like they did today and never stop trying.”
Argentina began the tournament as defending champions, but the players and supporters continue to celebrate every win with the emotion of a first success. One more victory would make Argentina the first country since Brazil in 1962 to retain the men’s World Cup.
