Ufuk Talay has been warned to expect a hostile reception when he returns to Allianz Stadium as Western Sydney Wanderers coach on October 16. Sydney FC captain Rhyan Grant expects emotions to run high during the opening match of the 2026-27 A-League Men season.

The fixture will be Ufuk Talay’s first league match in charge of Western Sydney Wanderers after leaving Sydney FC on March 24. He joined Western Sydney Wanderers less than a week later, while replacement Patrick Kisnorbo guided Sydney FC to the grand final.

Sydney Derby Carries Extra Edge

“It’s the perfect way to kick off what we believe can be a very special season,” Patrick Kisnorbo said about the opening-round derby.

Rhyan Grant expects Sydney FC supporters to make their feelings clear when Ufuk Talay steps back into Allianz Stadium with their city rivals.

“With ‘Uffy’ coming back in charge of the Wanderers for his first A-League game (as Western Sydney coach), I’m sure our fans will let him know exactly what they think,” Rhyan Grant said.

“There are a few players who have a score or two to settle as well.”

Rhyan Grant did not identify the players, but Jordan Courtney-Perkins and Wataru Kamijo received limited opportunities under Ufuk Talay. Both became regular starters after Patrick Kisnorbo took charge.

“I’m sure that will light up the game, make it a white-hot atmosphere and turn it into a real thriller, just like Sydney derbies always are,” Rhyan Grant said.

Sydney FC Begin Preseason With Victory

Sydney FC continued their preparations with a 4-0 trial win over National Premier Leagues New South Wales club North West Sydney Spirit on Wednesday night.

Mathias Macallister, Tiago Quintal, Marin France and Gabriel Popovic scored for Sydney FC. The result provided an encouraging start as Patrick Kisnorbo prepares his side for the October derby.
