Egypt FIFA complaint has been filed after the Egyptian Football Association demanded an investigation into refereeing decisions from its 3-2 World Cup round-of-16 loss to Argentina on Wednesday morning AEST.
Egypt led 2-0 before Argentina scored three times in 13 minutes to reach the quarterfinals, leaving Hossam Hassan’s side furious over French referee Francois Letexier and the use of VAR.
The dispute now adds more heat to a dramatic knockout stage, with France vs Morocco referee debate also drawing attention before the World Cup quarter-finals.
Egypt Demand FIFA Action
The Egyptian Football Association said president Hany Abou Rida had formally complained to FIFA, asking for an investigation into Letexier and his officiating team.
The complaint accused officials of "serious refereeing mistakes committed by the team of referees and double standards, which caused the Egypt team to lose the match and leave the World Cup".
Egypt also demanded the removal of Letexier and his crew from the rest of the tournament. The strongest frustration centred on a 58th-minute goal ruled out after VAR found an Egypt foul in the buildup.
Hassan Blasts Argentina Defeat
Hossam Hassan made his anger clear after the match, saying Egypt were denied proper treatment on one of football’s biggest stages.
"There was neither respect nor fair play today," Hassan said. "Argentina's victory is entirely undeserved."
Egypt’s first statement said "The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent," over the decisions and the way VAR was used.
Official World Cup updates and match information are available through the FIFA World Cup platform.
Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Kansas City, while Egypt leave the tournament still arguing that key calls changed the match.
