Erling Haaland NHL comparison has become a fun talking point during Norway’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup run, with many fans likening the superstar striker to Washington Capitals great Alex Ovechkin.
Norway have reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time, and Haaland’s size, power and ruthless scoring style have made the hockey crossover feel surprisingly natural.
The debate comes during a heated knockout week, after Hossam Hassan’s red card was explained following Egypt’s emotional defeat to Argentina.
Why Ovechkin Fits The Haaland Debate
The most popular answer on social media has been Ovechkin, the National Hockey League’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The comparison works because both players are built around power, timing and a rare ability to turn quiet spells into match-changing moments.
Haaland can drift on the edge of a game before appearing in the penalty area at exactly the right second.
Ovechkin has made a career of doing something similar on the ice, waiting for the opening, finding his shooting lane and punishing opponents with brutal finishing.
"I would say a lot more Ovi," FlashDavinYT wrote on X. "Kind of float around for a bit and then lock in for a few minutes and score a huge goal."
That description fits Haaland’s football identity almost perfectly.
He does not need constant touches to shape a match.
He needs one clean run, one loose defensive step or one delivery into space.
Power, Presence And Finishing
"It’s pretty clearly Ovechkin," @Smalls96 wrote on X. "Like there’s just way too many parallels to argue literally anyone else."
Haaland and Ovechkin are both physical scorers who make defenders feel their presence before the key moment even arrives.
Haaland’s straight-line running, strength in contact and left-footed finishing make him one of football’s most feared penalty-box players.
Ovechkin’s shot, body strength and scoring instincts made him a nightmare for National Hockey League defenders for years.
Eric Lindros was also mentioned by fans, largely because of his size and force.
Still, Ovechkin feels like the cleaner comparison because the goal-scoring link is too strong to ignore.
Official National Hockey League records and player information are available through the NHL.
Norway’s World Cup Story Keeps Growing
The timing of the debate says plenty about Haaland’s impact.
Norway are not usually a football nation that dominates global attention, but Haaland has helped drag them deep into the World Cup conversation.
Their quarter-final run has also given fans outside football a way to understand his style.
In hockey terms, Haaland is not a playmaker-first star.
He is the scorer opponents know is coming, yet still cannot stop.
