Junior Amone made an instant statement in his QLD Cup return, starring for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls in a 54-0 win over the PNG Hunters.
The former St George Illawarra Dragons playmaker had not played senior rugby league since early 2024, but his first match back showed why clubs once viewed him as a rising NRL talent.
The return comes during a major week in rugby league, with the State of Origin decider hinging on Nathan Cleary’s response as Sam Walker puts the Blues under pressure.
Amone Shines In Seagulls Rout
Amone lined up at five-eighth alongside Cameron Bukowski and Jaiyden Hunt for the Brisbane Broncos feeder side.
The 24-year-old produced six line-break assists and four try assists as Wynnum Manly Seagulls tore through PNG Hunters.
His performance could also put him in the conversation for Tonga ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup if he keeps building through the rest of the season.
“My whole goal was to come back to rugby league; however long it took. The journey is starting now,” Amone told The Illawarra Mercury last month.
“I got another why in my life to get back in the NRL.
“I want to make it back, and I want to make her proud now. There’s a lot more to just me playing footy. I’ve got a little family myself now.”
Dugan And Fainu Also In Focus
Josh Dugan also returned in the QLD Cup, playing centre for Northern Pride against Ipswich Jets.
“I felt this squad was missing a little bit of experience at times this season and he brought that,” Pride coach Sam Williams told News Corp.
Latu Fainu continued his push for a Wests Tigers recall, guiding Western Suburbs Magpies to a 42-8 NSW Cup win with one try, 90 running metres and three try assists.
Official competition updates are available through the Queensland Rugby League.
