Jarell Quansah red card drama turned England’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash with Mexico into a tense second-half battle at Estadio Azteca after the defender was sent off for a slide tackle on Jesus Gallardo.
England had briefly quietened the Mexico City crowd when Jude Bellingham scored twice in 98 seconds, but Mexico hit back before halftime and carried that momentum into the second period.
The red card added another layer to a wild knockout tie, following England vs Mexico extra time rules becoming a major talking point at Estadio Azteca.
Why Quansah Was Sent Off
Quansah was dismissed after sliding into Gallardo’s legs in a challenge that sparked anger from the Mexico bench.
Play initially continued for around a minute, but Mexico’s staff and substitutes reacted strongly and called for the officials to review the incident.
VAR then checked the challenge, and after a short review, Quansah was shown a red card.
The England defender appeared to make contact with the ball before catching Gallardo, but officials judged the tackle to be serious enough for dismissal.
England Forced To Survive With 10 Men
The decision left England down to 10 players for much of the second half, shifting the pressure firmly back toward Mexico.
Harry Kane later restored England’s cushion from the penalty spot, but Quansah’s red card changed the rhythm of the game and gave Mexico more belief.
The moment also carried historical weight. Quansah became the first England player to be sent off at a World Cup since Wayne Rooney in 2006.
