Cristiano Ronaldo substitution became a major talking point after Portugal’s 2-1 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 win over Croatia, with the 41-year-old watching from the bench as the match was decided in stoppage time.
Ronaldo had scored a second-half penalty to level the game at 1-1, his first World Cup knockout goal, before Portugal later struck the winner without him on the pitch. Croatia then nearly forced another twist, only for a late offside decision to save Portugal.

Ronaldo Plan Draws Attention
Portugal’s Ronaldo plan has been hard to read throughout the tournament. He played every minute of the group stage, more than any other outfield player entering the knockout rounds.
That made his substitution against Croatia feel surprising. In an elimination match that could have gone to penalties, taking off Portugal’s most experienced scorer invited obvious questions.
Substitutes Make The Difference
Portugal were rewarded by their bench, with substitutes playing a key role in the late goal that sent them through. That gave the decision a better look on the scoreboard, even if the timing still felt risky.
Ronaldo’s penalty mattered, but his overall influence remains under review. Against Spain, Portugal will need sharper movement, quicker service and better balance around him if he starts again.
Spain Test Brings Bigger Pressure
The Round of 16 match against Spain will be far less forgiving. Spain’s pace, width and pressing can punish any slow spells, especially if Portugal’s attack becomes too fixed around Ronaldo.
Ronaldo will almost certainly remain central to Portugal’s plan, but the staff must decide how long he can carry that role. The Croatia match showed both sides of the issue: Ronaldo can still produce the big moment, but Portugal may need a clearer plan for when the game stretches late.
