The Oryn Keeley Melbourne Storm move has become one of the first major developments before the June 30 NRL transfer deadline, with the Storm confirming the young forward will join the club effective immediately. Keeley had previously agreed to sign with Melbourne from the 2027 season, but the Dolphins granted him an early release after limited opportunities during the 2026 campaign. The move strengthens Melbourne's forward depth as the club pushes for a place in the finals.
Keeley arrives in Melbourne after making 28 NRL appearances across his time with the Dolphins, following his first grade debut with the Newcastle Knights in 2022. The second rower progressed through Newcastle's development pathways before continuing his career with the Dolphins.
Although injuries created opportunities in 2025, allowing Keeley to establish himself as an important member of the Dolphins' forward rotation with 16 appearances, game time became harder to secure this season. He featured in only six matches as competition for places intensified within the Dolphins squad.
Melbourne moved quickly to bring Keeley to the club ahead of schedule, ensuring he will be available after the Round 18 bye as the Storm look to build momentum during the second half of the season.
Storm strengthen forward depth
Storm Director of Football Frank Ponissi welcomed the early arrival and thanked the Dolphins for their cooperation throughout the process.
"He’s a quality young player and having him arrive earlier than expected is a great outcome for both the club and Oryn," Ponissi said.
"We thank the Dolphins for working with us to facilitate his early release and look forward to welcoming Oryn and his partner Cloe to Melbourne."
The addition provides Melbourne with another young forward option as the club manages the demands of the closing stages of the regular season. Keeley is regarded as a hardworking edge forward capable of adding energy and defensive resilience to the Storm pack.
His arrival also gives Melbourne additional depth during a period when injuries and representative commitments can place extra pressure on squad rotations.
Dolphins thank departing forward
The Dolphins confirmed Keeley's immediate departure in a club statement and acknowledged his contribution during his time with the organisation.
Keeley played an important role for the club during the injury affected 2025 season, stepping into the starting side when needed and delivering consistent performances across 16 matches.
While his opportunities became more limited this year, the early release allows him to pursue greater opportunities with one of the NRL's most consistent clubs.
The Dolphins continue to reshape their roster as they prepare for the remainder of the season while creating space within their squad for other developing forwards.
June 30 transfer window gathers pace
Keeley's switch is expected to be only the beginning of a busy period before the June 30 transfer deadline.
Several clubs are actively exploring late season roster changes, with immediate transfers requiring agreement between both clubs before the deadline expires.
One player reportedly attracting significant interest is Wests Tigers outside back Luke Laulilii, who is expected to complete a move to the New Zealand Warriors if negotiations are finalised.
The June 30 deadline remains one of the key dates on the NRL calendar because players joining new clubs after that point are generally unable to represent their new team until the following season.
As a result, clubs looking to strengthen their squads for the remainder of the campaign often work to complete deals before the cutoff.
For Melbourne, securing Keeley earlier than originally planned provides additional depth without waiting until 2027. For the Dolphins, granting the release allows a player seeking greater opportunity to continue his career elsewhere while the club focuses on its own squad planning.
With several clubs still monitoring the player market, further movement is expected before the transfer deadline passes.
