A severe Manly Warringah Sea Eagles playmaker crisis has overshadowed the team's commanding 30-4 victory over the Melbourne Storm at Brookvale Oval on Saturday night. The win was marred by a suspected serious knee injury to five-eighth Luke Brooks and a looming suspension for replacement half Joey Walsh.
Head coach Kieran Foran faces a selection headache ahead of next week's match against the Parramatta Eels. The club may be forced to blood 18-year-old prodigy Onitoni Large for his first-grade debut.
The sudden roster shuffling comes as other top teams face their own unexpected setbacks, similar to the recent Ivan Cleary Post Match Press Conference Highlights Penrith Panthers Slump.
Severe Injury Blows and Coach Reactions
Luke Brooks went down in the first half after landing awkwardly in a tackle and did not return to the field. "It’s a suspected ACL (rupture). It’s absolutely devastating for Luke," Manly Warringah Sea Eagles coach Kieran Foran said.
"We’re all shattered for him. Obviously we’ll wait for confirmation on it but they’re pretty certain it is, which is just gut-wrenching."
Joey Walsh was later sent to the sin bin for a hip-drop tackle on Ativalu Lisati, which likely rules him out of the upcoming round. With back-up option Brandon Wakeham also sidelined with a calf issue, Onitoni Large is firmly in the frame.
“I’m not going to speculate just yet,” Kieran Foran said regarding the teenage prodigy. “We’ve got a number of players knocking on the door that could potentially fill that hole if Joey’s not there.”
Match Summary and Player Performances
Before the injury disaster struck, back-rower Haumole Olakau’atu put on a clinic by scoring two quick tries within the opening 11 minutes. Fullback Tom Trbojevic also shined in his second game back from injury, racking up 141 running metres and setting up a try for Tolu Koula.
The Melbourne Storm suffered their own personnel losses during the match with Joe Chan and Moses Leo picking up injuries. Fans can check the updated ladder positions and injury reports on the official National Rugby League website.
"We’re struggling there a bit," Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy said after the final whistle. "I didn’t think it was quite as bad as the scoreboard looked, but having said that, I would have liked for us to have played in the first half like we played in the second half. That was the disappointing thing for me."
