The clinical Hawthorn Hawks win over Greater Western Sydney Giants by 14 points at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday night has cemented their top-four credentials. Hawthorn Hawks captain James Sicily immediately used the post-match platform to protect star midfielder Will Day from mounting media pressure.
Will Day excelled with 27 possessions and eight clearances during the gritty 96 to 82 triumph. His clean execution helped the dynamic Hawthorn Hawks midfield completely dominate the clearance count 54 to 29.
The physical toll of the match was severe for the visitors, with the devastating Max Gruzewski injury deepens Greater Western Sydney Giants pain as their casualty list grows to 15 players.
Player Reactions and Injury Toll
James Sicily lauded the work ethic of his teammates before telling reporters to back off his star midfielder. "They are like hardest working line group I’ve come across in my time in the Hawks. So they’re always in there working on just getting better," James Sicily told Channel 7.
"And obviously Will’s a great player. Makes us so much better. But you just guys need to just relax on him," James Sicily added. "Just let him do his thing and maybe try and let him go under the radar."
Will Day explained that a shift in perspective has helped him manage the external noise. "I’ve come into coming back into these games with a lot of expectation off my shoulders, and I probably want to usually was really hard on myself, whereas now I’m just want to come back and have fun," Will Day stated.
"And I know that if I’m healthy, that’s all that matters. So yeah, it’s a bit of a mindset change," Will Day said.
Tactical Summary and Ahead
The Hawthorn Hawks built a commanding 43-point lead in the third term before surviving a fierce late fightback from the undermanned visitors. Young star Nick Watson ignited the early surge with three goals before sitting out the second half with a tight hamstring.
Greater Western Sydney Giants forwards Max Gruzewski and Brent Daniels both exited before halftime with potentially season-ending injuries. Fans can view the updated competition ladder and full injury reports on the official AFL website.
The third-placed Hawthorn Hawks will now prepare for a Saturday afternoon match against the Melbourne Demons in Launceston.
