The Perth Bears appoint Gareth Holmes as new General Manager of Football in a key move ahead of the club's entry into the NRL in 2027. The announcement was made on Monday, with Holmes stepping into the role previously held by David Sharpe, who left the expansion club two months ago. The decision matters because Perth is entering a critical stage of preparation as it builds its football operations for its inaugural NRL season.
Holmes Brings Extensive Rugby League Experience
Holmes arrives with strong credentials after serving as CEO of the North Sydney Bears for the past five years. His rugby league background includes roles with the Parramatta Eels, Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He also managed the NRL's Elite Programs and worked as Australian Kangaroos team manager alongside Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga.
Perth Bears CEO Anthony De Ceglie welcomed the appointment.
“Gareth has been working closely with our team over the past year as we bring the Perth Bears to life while also recognising and honouring the legacy of the North Sydney Bears,” De Ceglie said.
“It’s a pivotal time for the club with our inaugural season not too far away now and I know that Gareth has all the characteristics and experience to ensure our football operations will be on the right track.”
Focus Turns to 2027 Debut
With the Bears' first NRL campaign drawing closer, Holmes will oversee football operations and help shape the club's roster and high-performance systems. Coach Mal Meninga is also set to reunite with Holmes as Perth continues preparations for its historic entry into the competition.
