Mexico became the first team to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after winning their opening two Group A matches. The achievement was confirmed on June 21, 2026, following victories over South Africa and Korea Republic. It is a major milestone for Javier Aguirre's side as they continue their campaign on home soil and strengthen hopes of a deep tournament run.
Mexico Takes Early Control of Group A
The hosts opened their World Cup journey with a 2-0 victory against South Africa in Mexico City before backing it up with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Korea Republic in Guadalajara. The crowd support has been noticeable throughout both matches, with Mexico responding by producing disciplined performances at both ends of the pitch.
By securing top spot in the group, Mexico is guaranteed to remain in Mexico City for the Round of 32 and potentially the Round of 16. Head coach Javier Aguirre highlighted the importance of playing at home, saying, "The fans' support has been fantastic, but it has also demanded a lot from us. Now, we are guaranteed two more games at Estadio Ciudad de México. The Mexico factor is important".
Defensive Strength Leading the Way
Mexico have yet to concede a goal, with goalkeeper Raúl Rangel recording two clean sheets. Goals from Julián Quiñones, Raúl Jiménez and Luis Romo have helped power the team into the knockout stage.
The team will conclude its group-stage campaign against Czechia before turning attention to the Round of 32, where a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H or I awaits.
