AFL legend Tony Modra remains in a critical condition after a truck accident in regional South Australia, although encouraging signs have emerged as his family continues to receive medical updates. The former Adelaide and Fremantle forward was injured when the truck he was driving crashed into a tree near Victor Harbor on Thursday evening. Modra’s wife Erica has shared a positive update, saying the football great is showing signs of improvement.
The 57 year old was airlifted to Flinders Medical Centre after emergency services attended the crash at Back Valley. South Australia Police confirmed the driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Modra showing encouraging signs
Initial reports indicated that Modra was in a serious condition following the accident, but an update shared through Adelaide radio provided some optimism.
Former Crows teammate Mark Ricciuto received a message from Modra’s wife Erica, which was shared on Triple M Adelaide. The update indicated that Modra was improving and continuing to fight through his injuries.
FIVEAA host Jess Adamson also shared information from SA Health, reporting positive developments in Modra’s condition.
“We’re hearing that he’s rallying, and that there are some encouraging signs, which is the best news,” Adamson said.
The update has provided relief to supporters and members of the football community who have followed Modra’s recovery since news of the crash emerged.
Police confirm details of crash
South Australia Police provided further details about the incident.
“About 5.15pm on Thursday 18 June, police and emergency services responded to reports that a truck had crashed into a tree on Range Road, Back Valley, about 10 kilometres west of Victor Harbor,” police said.
“The driver and sole occupant of the truck, a 57 year old Waitpinga man, was taken to hospital for treatment for serious injuries.”
Authorities confirmed traffic restrictions were in place for several hours following the crash before the road was reopened.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident remains ongoing.
AFL community supports football icon
News of Modra’s accident prompted an immediate response from the AFL community, with former teammates, clubs and supporters sending messages of support.
Modra remains one of the most popular figures in South Australian football history after becoming a superstar during Adelaide’s early years in the AFL.
He kicked 558 goals in 118 games for the Crows before later joining Fremantle, where he added another 47 goals to his career tally. His athletic marking ability and attacking style made him one of the most recognisable forwards of his era.
Modra won the Coleman Medal in 1997 and earned All Australian honours twice during his career.
His impact was particularly notable during the 1990s, including a remarkable 1993 season where he kicked 119 goals during the home and away campaign. He finished second in the Coleman Medal race that year behind Gary Ablett, who recorded 124 goals.
A lasting football legacy
Beyond his statistics, Modra became famous for his spectacular marking and ability to produce memorable moments during matches.
His career helped establish Adelaide as a major force in the AFL during the club’s early seasons, while his popularity extended well beyond South Australia.
Former teammates have continued to express their support as Modra receives treatment, with many describing him as an important figure in both the Adelaide and Fremantle football communities.
Fans across the country will continue to monitor updates as the AFL great recovers in hospital.
