Gilberto Mora World Cup debut has placed the Mexico teenager among a rare group of players to appear at the tournament before turning 18, adding another major moment to his fast rise with the national team.
Mora, 17, featured for Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against South Africa after already becoming the youngest player to make his international debut at last summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup. His appearance matters because only a small group of players have played at a World Cup at that age.

Femi Opabunmi played for Nigeria at 17 years and 101 days against England in 2002, while Salomon Olembe featured for Cameroon at 17 years and 185 days against Austria in 1998.
Brazil great Pele sits fifth on the list after making his World Cup debut at 17 years and 235 days against USSR in 1958. Mora followed at 17 years and 240 days against South Africa in 2026.
How Mora Compares With Messi And Ronaldo
Lionel Messi made his World Cup debut for Argentina in 2006 at the age of 18.
Messi came off the bench against Serbia and Montenegro on June 16, 2006, recording his first World Cup goal and assist in a 6-0 win.
Cristiano Ronaldo was 21 when he made his World Cup debut for Portugal on June 11, 2006, against Angola.
Ronaldo played six matches in that tournament and scored once as Portugal finished fourth.
