Socceroos World Cup qualification could be sealed earlier than usual after Australia opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Turkey and now face co-hosts United States at Seattle Stadium on Friday.
Australia are among several teams who can reach the new last-32 knockout round after only two group matches. The change matters because the expanded 48-team format sends the 12 group winners, 12 runners-up and eight best third-placed teams into the next phase.

Two Wins Likely Enough
Under the new format, two wins from the first two group games should be enough for most teams to progress.
That puts Australia in a strong position before their clash with United States, which kicks off at Seattle Stadium on Friday and falls at 5am Saturday AEST for Australian viewers.
The Socceroos’ win over Turkey gives them control of their path, but the meeting with United States will test their ability to handle a host nation carrying home support and knockout-round expectations.
Teams Who Can Move Early
Mexico and South Korea in Group A can also secure progress after two matches, along with Scotland in Group C.
United States and Australia are both in that position in Group D, while Sweden in Group F, France and Norway in Group I, Argentina and Austria in Group J, Columbia in Group K, plus England and Ghana in Group L, can also advance early.
The wider picture shows how quickly the first World Cup with 48 teams can change. One strong start can put a nation near the knockout rounds before the final group game.
Tiebreakers Add Extra Pressure
Teams with no points after two matchdays can also be knocked out early, but the path is less simple because third-placed teams remain in contention.
If teams finish level on points, head-to-head points come first, followed by head-to-head goal difference and head-to-head goals scored. Overall goal difference, total goals scored, team conduct score and FIFA world ranking then follow.
For Australia, the immediate task is clear. Beat United States, and the Socceroos should have a place in the last 32 within reach.
