FIFA World Cup action saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal held to a 1 1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday in Houston. DR Congo responded after conceding an early goal and secured a valuable point in their opening Group K match. The result matters because Portugal entered the tournament among the leading contenders but could not turn their early dominance into a victory.
Portugal started the match with confidence and controlled much of the opening period. Roberto Martinez’s side moved the ball quickly and looked dangerous from wide areas, creating problems for the DR Congo defence. Their pressure was rewarded after only six minutes when Joao Neves gave Portugal the lead.
Pedro Neto created the opening goal with a well placed cross from the left side. Neves attacked the delivery and produced a powerful header that found the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance. The early strike appeared to put Portugal in a strong position.
DR Congo, however, refused to collapse after falling behind. The African side remained organised and defended deep, making it difficult for Portugal to find clear openings in the final third. Their patience helped them stay in the contest as the match developed.
Portugal continued to enjoy possession but struggled to create consistent chances. Bruno Fernandes sent a dangerous cross through the box, but neither Neto nor Joao Cancelo could connect with the ball. Ronaldo was also unable to get on the end of the opportunity.
The match also saw attention surrounding Bernardo Silva, who was booked for a challenge on Edo Kayembe. The midfielder was involved in a busy day after the announcement of his move to Real Madrid, adding further interest around the Portugal squad.
DR Congo grew stronger as the first half progressed and began to threaten on the counterattack. Their improved performance eventually produced an equaliser in added time before the break. The goal changed the momentum and gave them belief heading into the second half.
Arthur Masuaku delivered a dangerous ball after a short corner routine, allowing Yoane Wissa to arrive unmarked near the back post. The Newcastle United striker rose to head the ball beyond Diogo Costa and make it 1 1.
The second half saw Portugal push for a response. They believed they had regained the lead when Cancelo produced a spectacular overhead kick. The goal was ruled out because the defender was in an offside position.
Portugal continued searching for a winning goal and looked increasingly towards Ronaldo for inspiration. The forward, making his sixth World Cup appearance, was unable to find the finishing touch when chances came his way.
Ronaldo missed two late opportunities after receiving cutbacks from Francisco Conceicao. The chances were difficult, but Portugal needed a moment of quality from their captain and did not get it. DR Congo stayed disciplined and protected the draw.
The result meant Ronaldo did not have the same impact that Lionel Messi produced in the previous match with his hat trick against Algeria. The Portuguese star did not speak to reporters after the game but later shared his thoughts on social media.
Ronaldo wrote that the team did not get the start they wanted but remained focused on the matches ahead. He encouraged the squad and supporters to keep their attention on the next challenge.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez was asked whether he considered replacing Ronaldo during the match. The manager defended his decision to keep the experienced forward on the pitch, pointing to his importance near the goal.
Martinez said Ronaldo’s presence creates problems for defenders and that his experience inside the penalty area remains valuable. The coach believes the striker can still influence matches even when he does not score.
For DR Congo, the draw was a significant achievement. They showed defensive discipline and attacking determination against a strong Portugal side. The performance demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level of international football.
Portugal will now need to improve their attacking efficiency in their next fixture. Their opening match showed quality in possession but also highlighted the importance of converting chances. The tournament remains open, but they will be expected to respond quickly.
