Portugal vs DR Congo will open Group K for both teams in Houston on Wednesday, with Cristiano Ronaldo starting what could be his final push to win the FIFA World Cup at the age of 41.
Ronaldo is set for his sixth World Cup appearance, matching Lionel Messi for the most tournament appearances by any player. Portugal enter as group favourites, while DR Congo are back on the world stage for only the second time.

Ronaldo carries Portugal focus
Ronaldo has spent the past stage of his career with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia after leaving Europe’s major leagues. That has made this World Cup another major test of his ability to lead Portugal against elite international opponents.
Portugal’s best World Cup finish with Ronaldo came in 2006, when they placed fourth. Their last campaign ended in the quarterfinals, which was their best result since that 2006 semi-final run.
There has also been reporting that Portugal manager Roberto Martinez is coaching his final World Cup with the national team, regardless of the final result.
DR Congo eye surprise run
DR Congo are playing in their second World Cup, having last appeared in 1974 as the Republic of Zaire. That tournament ended with defeats in all three matches, but this squad arrives with belief after beating Jamaica in March qualifying.
Yoane Wissa is expected to lead DR Congo’s attack, while the team’s defensive strength has been central to its return to the tournament.
The match will be refereed by Abdulrahman Al-Jassim of Qatar, with kickoff scheduled for 1pm ET. Fox will broadcast the game in the United States, with Telemundo, fubo and Peacock also listed as coverage options.
