Lionel Messi delivered another historic performance as Argentina opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Algeria at Kansas City Stadium on June 16. The Argentina captain scored all three goals, equalling Miroslav Klose's all-time FIFA World Cup goals record of 16 and helping the defending champions begin their title defence in style.
Messi Reaches Historic Milestone
The match started at a fast pace, with both teams seeing early efforts ruled out for offside. Messi broke the deadlock in the 17th minute after collecting the ball outside the box, beating his marker and curling a brilliant finish beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
Argentina controlled much of the contest, although Algeria remained competitive for long periods. The crowd erupted whenever Messi touched the ball, sensing history was within reach.
After the break, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner continued to lead the attack. His second goal arrived when Zidane failed to hold Alexis Mac Allister's shot, allowing Messi to react quickest and score from close range.
The 38-year-old completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a trademark curling effort from the edge of the area, marking his 200th senior international appearance in memorable fashion.
What They Said
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his captain after the match.
"I don't have the words to describe [Lionel] Messi. For 20 years, he's had us used to seeing things like this, and he inspires everyone who watches him play."
Algeria captain Aissa Mandi added:
"What made the difference is that they have a player who is ruthless, almost every chance he gets ends up in the back of the net."
Messi reflected on his remarkable journey after matching the World Cup scoring record.
"Everything I’m experiencing now is a bonus. I’ve been fortunate enough to achieve all my dreams — or even more than I ever dreamed of achieving."
What's Next?
Argentina will face Austria on June 22, where Messi will have the chance to move ahead of Klose and become the outright leading scorer in FIFA World Cup history. Algeria, meanwhile, take on Jordan in their second Group J fixture.
