Cabo Verde Spain World Cup draw became one of the great early stories of the tournament after the debutants held pre-tournament favourites Spain to a 0-0 result at Atlanta Stadium.
Roberto “Pico” Lopes, the Dublin-born Shamrock Rovers defender, played a central role as Cabo Verde stayed organised, brave and composed against one of world football’s strongest squads.
The result added to Cabo Verde’s growing tournament story after FIFA World Cup 2026: Cabo Verde Stuns Spain as LinkedIn Story and Merlin the Duck Capture Attention, with another chapter built on family, pride and defensive grit. Fans can follow official updates through the FIFA website.
Lopes Helps Build Historic Result
Lopes had been given a special send-off in Crumlin, Dublin, by friends, family and neighbours wearing Cabo Verde colours before travelling to the World Cup.
His wife, Leah O’Shaughnessy, planned to travel through the United States in a camper van with their seven-month-old son, Diego, so the family could be part of his World Cup moment.
“We’re going to get a camper van and travel through the States,” O’Shaughnessy said.
“He probably won’t remember it, but we’ll be able to look back on the photos and videos and say that he was able to watch his daddy in the [GWC].”
On the field, Lopes tackled, blocked and led from defence as Cabo Verde committed only one foul against Spain.
That was the fewest by any team in a World Cup match on record.
Vozinha Delivers Emotional Display
Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha also produced a standout performance, making seven saves against Spain.
Only Pat Jennings has made more saves in a World Cup match at age 40 or older, with 10 for Northern Ireland against Brazil in 1986.
Vozinha cried after the match as he reflected on family members who could not be there.
“I have worked my whole life for this moment. I’m 40 years old. I started playing football professionally when I was 25, in 2012. I thought about leaving but I continued because of this dream. This is for everyone.”
For Cabo Verde, the draw was not just a result. It was a statement that their World Cup debut belongs on the biggest stage.
