New Zealand vs Iran was one of the standout matches on the opening day of Group G at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with the All Whites securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Iran in Los Angeles on June 16. Returning to the tournament for the first time in 16 years, New Zealand showed resilience and attacking quality through Elijah Just, whose two goals earned a valuable point against one of Asia's strongest sides.
Elijah Just Leads New Zealand's Charge
The All Whites stunned Iran early when Elijah Just finished a swift move in the seventh minute after excellent work from Chris Wood. The early goal lifted New Zealand's confidence, and they looked dangerous on the counterattack throughout the first half.
Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian in the 31st minute after sustained pressure around the New Zealand penalty area, sending the teams into halftime level at 1-1.
Iran Fight Back Twice
Just restored New Zealand's advantage in the 54th minute with another composed finish following a Wood assist. However, Iran struck back again when Mohammad Mohebi converted Rezaeian's cross to make it 2-2.
The closing stages saw Iran push for a winner, but goalkeeper Max Crocombe produced several key saves to preserve the draw.
