Philadelphia Stadium witnessed a dramatic finish on June 14 as Amad Diallo's winner gave Côte d'Ivoire a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening Group E match at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Manchester United winger came off the bench and scored in the 90th minute, helping Les Éléphants claim three valuable points and move level on points with Germany in the group standings. The late goal capped an entertaining contest that featured four shots hitting the woodwork and several momentum swings.
Amad Delivers When Côte d'Ivoire Needed Him Most
For much of the evening, the match looked destined to end without a goal. Both sides created opportunities but struggled to find the finishing touch.
Ecuador threatened first when John Yeboah unleashed a powerful strike from distance that crashed against the crossbar. Moments later, Alan Minda came even closer after being released by Pedro Vite, but his curling effort also struck the bar.
Côte d'Ivoire responded through lively winger Yan Diomande, whose pace and direct running repeatedly troubled Ecuador's defense. Bazoumana Toure also forced goalkeeper Hernan Galindez into a sharp save with a low effort.
Woodwork Denies Both Teams
The action continued after halftime. Ecuador captain Enner Valencia struck the post from a difficult angle, while Côte d'Ivoire's Elye Wahi saw his first-time effort cannon off the crossbar.
As the second half progressed, Côte d'Ivoire began controlling possession and pushing Ecuador deeper into their own half. The crowd sensed a breakthrough was coming as Les Éléphants increased the pressure.
That decisive moment finally arrived in the closing stages when substitute Amad Diallo calmly guided his shot into the bottom corner. The goal sparked celebrations among Ivorian supporters and secured a memorable opening victory.
Diomande Makes History
Although Amad scored the winner, teenager Yan Diomande was named Superior Player of the Match. At 19 years and 212 days old, he became the first teenager ever to represent Côte d'Ivoire in a FIFA World Cup match.
"We needed that. We came here to make history. We still have two more matches ahead of us, and we need to approach them with the same mentality and try to win them. We had to stay focused. We knew it was going to be a difficult match because we know the Ecuadorian players – they're physically very strong. They caused us problems, of course, but we stayed composed and remained focused."
“We fought hard, we succeeded, and we’re all delighted. It’s always a pleasure to represent your country. It’s tough and it’s stressful because we’re representing nearly 33 million people. We’re playing for our families, our friends, our loved ones, and in this kind of competition we all want to give it our all. We want to win every match. We want to make our mark on history, and that’s what we’re all trying to do together.”
Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece said:
“In the second half, we made the necessary adjustments and were in control enough to secure at least a draw. We put in a tremendous effort against a strong opponent. The final result wasn't what we wanted, but it's just the beginning, and we have to keep working.”
