The University of Kentucky announced the news on Monday, leaving teammates, coaches and supporters saddened by the loss of a young player who was preparing for his future both on and off the field. Kentucky Pays Tribute to Nicholas 'Happy' Smith
Smith joined Kentucky before the 2025 season as a three-star recruit from Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia. He spent his first year redshirting while developing within the program.
Kentucky did not provide details regarding the cause of death. Head coach Will Stein released a statement following the tragic news.
"Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic's family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him. This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory."
Remembering 'Big Happ'
Known affectionately as "Happy" and later "Big Happ," Smith was respected by teammates for his positive attitude. He also played basketball in high school and chose Kentucky despite interest from Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern.
Away from football, Smith was majoring in community leadership and development. According to his team profile, he hoped to start a food business after pursuing a career in the NFL. One of his favorite pieces of advice was, "you are what you believe."
