Jarome Luai Tigers decline concerns have grown after Wests Tigers were thrashed 68-0 by Penrith Panthers, leaving Benji Marshall’s side under pressure after a sharp mid-season drop in NRL form.
The Tigers had started the year as one of the NRL’s better stories, but two heavy defeats and a rising injury list have tested whether their early progress was built to last.

Tigers Face Reality Check After Heavy Loss
The Daily Telegraph’s Dean Ritchie had already warned last month that the Tigers’ “bubble” might be “bursting” before their latest setback.
“The Tigers’ opening 20 was one of the worst opening 20s I have seen from a side all year, they couldn’t complete a set,” Brent Read said on NRL 360.
“They just made mistake after mistake.”
Wests Tigers were missing key players including Adam Doueihi and Samuela Fainu, but the scale of the defeat left little room for comfort.

Luai Scrutiny Grows As Form Slump Deepens
Luai’s future has become part of the wider debate after reports linked his next move with PNG, while the Tigers have struggled badly since the news emerged.
“The Luai effect is important to touch on because the numbers don’t lie. Since Jarome signed with PNG, they have scored 66 points and conceded 226. That is an incredible amount,” Ritchie said.
Former premiership winner Luke Keary said Luai must carry more of the load.
“Jarome has to stand up. He hasn’t brought them success... they haven’t done anything while he’s been there,” Keary said.
Braith Anasta said the “jury is still out” on the Tigers and warned the next few months would shape how rival players view Marshall’s rebuild.
“If you lose 68-0 you become more unattractive,” Anasta said.
Despite the noise, Read argued Luai has helped change the club’s identity and make Wests Tigers a more serious landing spot for players.
The Tigers remain in the finals race, but their response against Gold Coast Titans will say plenty about whether this slide is temporary or a deeper problem.
