West Coast's defensive stocks have taken another hit after Reuben Ginbey suffered a quad injury during Saturday night's AFL clash against Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium. The 21-year-old defender, who had been among the Eagles' most consistent performers this season, was injured while chasing Port forward Mitch Georgiades in the third quarter. The setback leaves West Coast short on key defensive options as they prepare for next week's match against North Melbourne.
Eagles Forced Into Defensive Reshuffle
Ginbey's injury comes at a difficult time for the Eagles, who are already missing Harry Edwards and former defensive leader Jeremy McGovern. Coach Andrew McQualter suggested Brandon Starcevich could be used as an undersized key defender.
"He's done that before, and he's certainly got a strong aerial game, so yep, that'd be an option we look into," McQualter said.
Tylar Young and Rhett Bazzo are expected to carry greater responsibility in defence. McQualter also backed Young to handle the challenge.
"He'll step up, I've got no doubt," McQualter said.
