Cyril Rioli will return to Victorian football later this month after local club Tongala confirmed the Hawthorn great will play in a Murray Football League match against Cobram on June 27. The appearance marks Rioli’s first local football game in Victoria since retiring from the AFL in 2018 and has generated major excitement across regional football circles.
Tongala announced the surprise signing on social media, confirming the four time premiership winner would wear the club’s blue jumper in what is expected to be one of the biggest local football events of the season.
The former Hawthorn superstar has rarely appeared publicly since stepping away from the AFL and relocating to Darwin, making the announcement even more significant.
Tongala confirms major signing
Tongala Football Netball Club confirmed the news through its official channels, describing the appearance as a landmark moment for the club.
“TFNC are thrilled to announce CYRIL RIOLI will be pulling on the blue jumper for a landmark game at Tongala on Saturday, 27 JUNE,” the club announced.
The match against Cobram will form part of a larger club event, with Tongala promoting the fixture as one of its major community days.
“We are beyond excited to have him join our boys at our home game against Cobram,” the club said.
“Please join us for what is also our Men’s Day. The Tin Shed will be in full swing, with sweepstakes, barbecue and of course, everyone’s favourite Over 40s sprint race. Don’t miss this amazing day out at TFNC!”
The announcement immediately attracted widespread attention from AFL fans eager to see one of the game’s most exciting players back on the field.
First Victorian local game since retirement
Rioli retired unexpectedly in 2018 after one of the most decorated careers of the modern era.
The dynamic forward played 189 AFL games for Hawthorn and helped deliver four premierships during the club’s dominant period under Alastair Clarkson.
His individual achievements included winning the 2015 Norm Smith Medal after starring in Hawthorn’s Grand Final victory over West Coast.
Since retirement, Rioli has remained largely out of the public spotlight.
The upcoming appearance with Tongala will only be his second return visit to Victoria since stepping away from the game.
That rarity has added to anticipation surrounding the June 27 fixture.
AFL legend reminded fans of his talent last year
Although public appearances have been uncommon, Rioli reminded football fans last year that his skills remain intact.
He starred in the EJ Whitten Legends Game at Marvel Stadium, producing several memorable moments in front of more than 31,000 spectators.
Rioli was eventually awarded best on ground honours after becoming one of the standout attractions of the exhibition match.
Commentator Matthew Richardson praised the former Hawk during the broadcast.
“He’s been one of the highlights of the game,” Richardson said.
“I think the crowd are just loving seeing Cyril back here at Marvel Stadium.”
“A bit of Hollywood entertainment there from Cyril, that’s what the crowd came to see.”
The performance reignited discussion around Rioli’s unique ability to influence games with moments of creativity and flair.
Regional football continues attracting big names
Rioli’s signing is another example of regional football clubs attracting high profile former AFL talent to local competitions.
Local leagues across Victoria regularly secure appearances from former stars, creating major attendance boosts and increased community engagement.
For Tongala, securing one of the sport’s most recognisable modern players represents a significant moment.
The Murray Football League club will now prepare for increased interest as supporters travel to watch Rioli pull on the boots again.
For football fans, the opportunity to watch one of Hawthorn’s greatest modern players return to Victorian grassroots football is expected to make June 27 one of the most anticipated local fixtures of the year.
