Australia's World Cup campaign has received a major boost with Lucas Herrington emerging as one of the most exciting young players in the squad. The 18-year-old defender has been named in the Socceroos' 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after impressing coach Tony Popovic in recent international matches. Having started Australia's last three games, including a high-pressure clash against Mexico at the Rose Bowl in California, Herrington is now on track to make his World Cup debut against Türkiye on June 13.
Teen Talent Taking His Chance
Herrington has handled the rapid rise with remarkable composure. Speaking from Oakland, California, he said: "I'm over the moon. It's a dream come true. I'm so happy to be here. I can't wait for it all to get started."
The young defender looked comfortable even in front of nearly 80,000 fans against Mexico, showing maturity beyond his years.
"It's just enjoyment. I love the game. I love playing," Herrington said.
After making his senior debut for Brisbane Roar in 2024, he earned a move to Colorado Rapids and has continued his development in Major League Soccer.
Socceroos Back Rising Star
Veteran defender Jason Geria praised the teenager's attitude.
"He has a really high ceiling," Geria said.
Australia will hope Herrington's fearless approach carries into the World Cup as the Socceroos aim to make an impact on football's biggest stage.
