Ricardo Pepi strengthened his case for a major role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after helping the United States earn a 3-2 friendly victory over Senegal on May 31 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. While Pepi did not score, the PSV Eindhoven forward created two goals and showed why coach Mauricio Pochettino views him as more than just a finisher ahead of the tournament.
Pepi Impresses as Creator
Pepi's sharp movement and vision helped unlock the Senegal defense. His clever touch set up Christian Pulisic before Sergiño Dest opened the scoring, and he later provided another assist for the Americans. The crowd responded enthusiastically as the U.S. attack found rhythm during a strong first-half display.
Pochettino praised Pepi's ability to impact matches, saying he has “the possibility to score,” and “to create chances some time from nowhere.”
From 2022 Heartbreak to 2026 Opportunity
After missing the 2022 World Cup squad, Pepi has battled injuries and setbacks to earn his place this time. Pulisic said, “He absolutely deserves to be here.”
