Tete Yengi Socceroos selection has given Australia a fresh World Cup story, with the uncapped striker saying he is representing injured brother Kusini Yengi after earning a place in Tony Popovic’s 26-man squad.
The 25-year-old forced his way into Australia’s FIFA World Cup plans after a strong run with Japanese club Machida Zelvia, where he helped the team reach an AFC Champions League Elite final.

Yengi Takes His Chance
“It’s crazy,” he said.
“I don’t know if it’s really sunk in yet. There are so many great players that have played for this country, some of my idols.
“I’m just grateful for the opportunity. Hopefully I can get on the pitch. It’s amazing my first call-up has come at a World Cup.”
Tete Yengi is one of two uncapped players in the squad, and his selection comes after Kusini Yengi’s World Cup hopes were ended by a serious thigh injury during his loan spell with Cerezo Osaka.
Brotherly Bond Adds Emotion
“He was very excited for me, (and) probably a bit disappointed with himself not getting the opportunity, but I’m here on his behalf,” said former Newcastle Jets striker Tete Yengi.
“It’s everyone’s dream to come to the World Cup, so I’m grateful to be here, and he is also so happy for me.
“Unfortunately, he couldn’t be here through his injuries. I would have liked to be here with him. Hopefully maybe the next one – let’s see.”
Tete Yengi also has a long-standing bond with fellow South Australian-raised striker Mohamed Toure, while senior players such as Maty Ryan, Jackson Irvine, Awer Mabil and Mathew Leckie offer World Cup experience. Official tournament updates are available through FIFA.
