The Delhi Capitals have officially signed English legspinning allrounder Rehan Ahmed Delhi Capitals for INR 75 lakh as a replacement for Ben Duckett.
The 21 year old joins the squad for his first ever IPL stint, arriving just as the franchise looks to bolster its variety in the spin department.
This mid season move follows Ben Duckett’s decision to withdraw from the tournament to focus on his Test career after a difficult Ashes series.
The league continues to see major shifts in roster strategy as teams finalize their playing XIs for the high stakes mid season clashes.
Strengthening the Spin Attack
Rehan Ahmed joins an impressive Delhi Capitals spin battery led by captain Axar Patel and the experienced Kuldeep Yadav.
The young star also links up with uncapped bowlers Vipraj Nigam and Tripurana Vijay to give the Capitals one of the most versatile slow bowling groups in the league.
His arrival is timely given his recent form in the T20 World Cup, where he helped England secure a win against New Zealand.
In that match, Rehan Ahmed claimed 2 for 28 and smashed a quick 19 not out to prove his value as a genuine allrounder.
Rehan Ahmed's T20 Credentials
With 97 T20 appearances already under his belt, Rehan Ahmed brings a wealth of global experience despite his young age.
He has taken 85 wickets in the shortest format at an economy rate of 8.13 and scored over 1000 runs at a strike rate near 126.
The legspinner has been a consistent performer in The Hundred, claiming 23 wickets across 25 innings at a tidy economy of 7.68.
He also boasts experience from the Big Bash League in Australia and the ILT20 in the UAE, making him well prepared for Indian conditions.
The Consequences of Withdrawal
Ben Duckett’s last minute exit is expected to result in a two year ban from the IPL, matching the penalty given to Harry Brook for a similar withdrawal.
Delhi Capitals have been forced to navigate several player absences this season, leading to a heavy reliance on their international replacements.
Meanwhile, former Punjab allrounder Nikhil Chaudhary is currently training with the squad as a reserve player.
