Melbourne Storm centre Jack Howarth is preparing for a highly anticipated rematch against the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night, aiming to make amends for last year’s grand final disappointment. The 25-year-old, who lasted less than 15 minutes in the 2024 decider due to injury, spoke openly about his focus on redemption and returning to full fitness ahead of the Round 3 clash at AAMI Park in Melbourne. Howarth’s early-season form has been encouraging, with two tries in as many games, demonstrating his readiness to contribute fully to the Storm’s campaign.
A Career Marked by Challenges
Howarth’s career has been disrupted by a series of setbacks, including groin and biceps injuries that curtailed his State of Origin prospects and limited his involvement in the 2024 grand final. In addition, an unexpected appendicitis diagnosis last year led to the discovery and successful removal of a small tumour. Despite these challenges, Howarth has adopted a forward-looking approach, prioritising health and performance over lingering on past disappointments.
“I had a few surgeries, so I was focusing on myself and getting myself in a good position to be ready to play round 1,” Howarth said. “I just decided to switch off and spend time with family and friends, and I think that helped me and put me in a good position.”
Shifting Sides and Finding Form
Howarth has also adapted his positional play, moving from the left side to his preferred right wing. “I grew up playing on the right my whole life,” he explained. “When I was playing on the left, it was just an available spot there. I just wanted to get into the team, so I was happy to play on the left. But whenever, wherever the team needs me, I’m happy to play either left or right.”
The Storm enters the match 2-0 after a strong start to the NRL season, despite a challenging off-season. Coach Craig Bellamy emphasised the importance of focusing on the present rather than dwelling on last year’s results. “We would have liked to have won, but we didn’t. At some stage, you’ve got to park that. This is a new year,” Bellamy said.
Dragons Strengthen with Young Forward
Meanwhile, the St George Illawarra Dragons have secured a long-term commitment from promising second-rower Dylan Egan, who has extended his contract through the 2029 season. The 21-year-old, who has scored three tries in eight games since his NRL debut last year, is set to return from an ACL injury in Round 8.
“The Dragons have continued their commitment to building a squad around young local talent, extending the contract of Dylan Egan through the 2029 NRL season,” the club stated. Egan, a local junior who supported the Dragons since childhood, expressed his excitement at the extension. “It means the world to secure my future with the club that I grew up supporting,” he said.
Egan’s Journey and Motivation
Egan’s development has been closely watched since his debut in Round 4 last year. He experienced the highs of an NRL debut followed by the lows of a season-ending injury but remained committed to improvement. “Growing up with Hamish Stewart and Hayden Buchanan down at Gerringong, and coming through the grades with the Couchmans and a lot of the other boys, it’s very motivating for us to try to get the club back to that form that I was watching when I was six years old,” Egan said.
Coach Shane Flanagan praised Egan’s character and resilience, highlighting his value to the squad’s long-term plans. “Dylan is one of those young men who has shown impeccable character and work ethic from a young age. We are all looking forward to his continued development as an NRL player,” Flanagan stated.
Both the Storm and Dragons enter this round with renewed optimism. Howarth’s focus on redemption and Egan’s long-term commitment reflect the players’ determination to contribute to their teams’ successes. Fans will be keen to see whether Howarth can deliver a performance that helps the Storm overcome last year’s disappointment, while the Dragons will monitor Egan’s progress as he prepares to return from injury.
The upcoming clash promises to highlight the resilience and ambition of two NRL sides seeking to strengthen their positions early in the season. With key players motivated by personal and professional goals, the match will offer insights into the evolving dynamics of both squads.
