Monaco forward Folarin Balogun continued his hot streak, scoring for the third consecutive game in Monaco’s 2-1 win against Rennes on Saturday, which saw them climb to the top of the French Ligue 1 standings. However, the victory came at a cost, as the United States international was forced off the field with an injury in the second half, casting doubt over his availability for upcoming international fixtures.
Balogun, who has been in impressive form this season, netted the decisive goal in the 22nd minute, securing Monaco’s lead. The 22-year-old striker was picked out by a precise pass from Eliesse Ben Seghir on the edge of the penalty area, showcasing his sharp movement and composure. With a quick turn, Balogun lost his marker and coolly chipped the ball over Rennes goalkeeper Steve Mandanda with his left foot. His third goal in as many games solidified his status as a key player for the Ligue 1 leaders.
Despite the triumph, Monaco’s celebrations were dampened when Balogun left the pitch just after the hour mark, clutching his shoulder in visible discomfort. While the extent of the injury remains unclear, there are growing concerns about whether Balogun will be fit to join the U.S. Men’s National Team for their upcoming matches against Panama and Mexico. Monaco manager Adi Hütter expressed caution, stating, "It’s too early to know the full extent of Folarin’s injury. We will assess it in the coming days, but we are hoping it’s not too serious."
Monaco’s win means they now sit unbeaten at the top of the table, having shown resilience to maintain their slender lead throughout the second half against a determined Rennes side. Rennes, who are known for their aggressive and pressing style, were relentless in their attempts to find an equalizer, but Monaco’s defense, marshaled by Axel Disasi, held firm under pressure.
The visitors had taken an early lead through German defender Thilo Kehrer, who found the back of the net in the sixth minute, converting from close range following a well-worked corner. However, Rennes responded quickly, equalizing just five minutes later through Ludovic Blas. The midfielder produced a moment of individual brilliance, unleashing a thunderous 25-meter strike that flew past Monaco goalkeeper Philipp Köhn, leaving him with no chance.
As the match wore on, both sides had opportunities to add to the scoreline, but Monaco’s narrow lead ultimately proved decisive. The result sees Monaco extend their unbeaten run and maintain a three-point advantage over Paris Saint-Germain, who will have the chance to close the gap when they face Nice on Sunday.
In other Ligue 1 action, Georgia international Zuriko Davitashvili stole the spotlight with a hat-trick as Saint-Étienne secured a 3-1 win over Auxerre, moving up to 12th place in the league standings. The 22-year-old winger, who joined Saint-Étienne from Bordeaux in the summer, was instrumental in his team’s victory, scoring all three goals to lead the struggling side to their second win of the season.
Davitashvili opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a powerful strike that capped off a well-executed team move involving Léo Pétrot and Mathis Amougou. After the interval, he doubled his tally with a clinical finish and later completed his hat-trick in the 86th minute, chipping the Auxerre goalkeeper with a composed effort on the counter-attack. Despite Canadian forward Thelonius Blair pulling one back for Auxerre, Davitashvili’s performance ensured Saint-Étienne took all three points.
Saint-Étienne’s resurgence comes after a difficult start to the season, which included a humiliating 8-0 defeat at the hands of Nice last month. The former French football powerhouse, who have won 10 Ligue 1 titles in their history, have struggled to readjust to the top flight following a two-year absence. Manager Laurent Batlles praised Davitashvili’s impact, saying, "Zuriko has been fantastic for us. His talent and determination are exactly what we need as we fight to climb up the table."
Elsewhere, Lille followed up their historic midweek Champions League victory over Real Madrid with a hard-fought 2-1 win at home against Toulouse. However, the match was anything but straightforward for Paulo Fonseca’s men, as Toulouse took a deserved lead in the 39th minute through Zakaria Aboukhlal, whose angled shot crossed the line after being parried by Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Chevalier, who had been the hero in Lille’s Champions League triumph, came to the rescue again early in the second half, making a crucial save in the 47th minute to keep his side in the game. Lille equalized shortly after when Angel Gomes latched onto a delicately chipped assist from Osame Sahraoui, finishing with the outside of his foot to level the score.
With momentum shifting in their favor, Lille continued to push for a winner, and it came in the 75th minute courtesy of up-and-coming midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. The 17-year-old showcased his exceptional dribbling skills on the counter-attack, beating a defender before delivering a perfectly weighted through ball for Mitchel Bakker, who slotted home to seal the victory.
The win sees Lille move up to fourth place in the Ligue 1 standings, while Toulouse slumped to their third consecutive defeat, leaving them in 16th place, just above the relegation zone.
As Ligue 1 heads into its next round of fixtures, Monaco’s title challenge looks increasingly promising, though they will be hoping for positive news on Balogun’s injury front.
