France vs Spain cards shaped several passages of Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal at Dallas Stadium, where the Spain national team won 2-0. Referee Iván Barton awarded 23 fouls, issued three yellow cards and did not send off any player.
The France national team committed 11 fouls and received two bookings. The Spain national team conceded 12 free kicks but collected only one yellow card.
The absence of a red card allowed both teams to finish with 11 players before attention turned to the other semifinal, where Thomas Tuchel says England are ready for Argentina’s historic edge.
France vs Spain Disciplinary Statistics

|---|---|---|---|
Fouls committed | 11 | 12 | 23 |

The card count was low compared with the number of fouls. Only three of the 23 offences resulted in cautions, showing that most incidents were treated as ordinary free-kick offences.

Adrien Rabiot Receives Early Warning
Adrien Rabiot collected the first booking in the ninth minute after catching Dani Olmo near the edge of the France penalty area. The foul stopped Dani Olmo as the Spain midfielder moved into a dangerous central position.
Iván Barton immediately showed Adrien Rabiot a yellow card and awarded the Spain national team a free kick within shooting distance. The caution left Adrien Rabiot at risk of being dismissed if he committed another bookable offence.
France coach Didier Deschamps replaced Adrien Rabiot with Manu Koné at halftime. That decision removed the danger of the France national team playing the closing stages with a booked central midfielder.
Lucas Digne Concedes Penalty Without a Card
Lucas Digne committed the match’s most damaging foul but escaped a booking. The incident began when Marc Cucurella sent a high cross toward the far side of the France penalty area.
Lucas Digne attempted to bring the ball under control before clearing it. Lamine Yamal accelerated into the space between Lucas Digne and the ball, and the defender’s raised boot caught the Spain winger on the left thigh.
Iván Barton immediately awarded a penalty. Lucas Digne was not shown a yellow card, meaning the punishment for the offence was limited to the spot kick.
A penalty does not automatically require a booking for the defender. Under IFAB Law 12, the referee must decide separately whether an offence was reckless, stopped a promising attack or met another condition for disciplinary action.
Marc Cucurella Booked for Stopping Michael Olise
Marc Cucurella received the Spain national team’s only yellow card in the 32nd minute. The left-back barged into Michael Olise as the France attacker attempted to advance along the right side.
The challenge brought Michael Olise to the ground and stopped the move before he could approach the penalty area. The France national team received a free kick from the right flank, while Marc Cucurella entered the referee’s notebook.
The booking placed Marc Cucurella under pressure because another caution would have produced a red card. Marc Cucurella completed the match without committing a second bookable offence.
Kylian Mbappé Booked in Closing Minutes
Kylian Mbappé received the final yellow card in the 87th minute. The France captain challenged Unai Simón and caught the Spain goalkeeper while attempting to reach the ball.
The timing of the contact made the challenge worthy of a caution in Iván Barton’s judgment. Play was stopped, Kylian Mbappé was booked and Unai Simón remained on the field.
No confrontation followed the incident, and Kylian Mbappé completed the semifinal. It was the France national team’s second and final yellow card.
How the Other Fouls Happened
Most of the remaining offences occurred during midfield pressure, recovery runs and attempts to stop players near the penalty area. They resulted in free kicks without further action from Iván Barton.
Rodri Hernández fouled Ousmane Dembélé near the left side of the Spain penalty area late in the second half. Lamine Yamal also conceded free kicks after bringing down Kylian Mbappé and clipping Désiré Doué near the box.
The France national team was penalised for a foul on Rodri Hernández inside the Spain penalty area during an attacking delivery. None of those incidents brought a booking.
The official FIFA match report confirms that the Spain national team advanced after a semifinal controlled without a dismissal. Adrien Rabiot, Marc Cucurella and Kylian Mbappé were the only players booked from 23 total fouls.
