World Cup Round of 32 football made an instant mark as the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup produced major upsets, late winners, penalty drama and a sharper Golden Boot race.
Germany, the Netherlands and Croatia all exited early, while Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Spain and Portugal moved into the Round of 16 after a wild opening knockout phase.
The round also produced one of the tournament’s best tactical stories, with Argentina surviving Cape Verde’s low-block masterclass in a tense 3-2 extra-time win.
Giants Fall Early
Germany’s campaign ended in pain after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay, with Julian Nagelsmann resigning straight after the loss.
The Netherlands also went out on penalties, falling to Morocco after Issa Diop’s late equaliser forced the match beyond normal time.
Croatia’s exit carried extra emotion as Portugal won 2-1 in a match shaped by VAR, including a disallowed last-minute Croatian equaliser.
The defeat also ended Luka Modric’s World Cup career after silver and bronze medals in the previous two editions.
Favourites Survive Scares
Brazil trailed Japan before Gabriel Martinelli’s injury-time goal completed their comeback.
England were pushed by DR Congo before Harry Kane’s brace rescued the Three Lions, while Goncalo Ramos headed Portugal into the next round.
Argentina had the toughest test among the leading contenders. Cape Verde fought back twice before an own goal settled a thrilling contest in extra time.
France and Spain had smoother routes, keeping their tournament rhythm as the knockout bracket tightened.
Hosts And Golden Boot Race Shine
Canada beat South Africa for a first World Cup knockout victory, while the United States defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina despite losing Folarin Balogun to a red card.
Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 and remain one of only two teams, along with Spain, yet to concede in the tournament.
Lionel Messi leads the Golden Boot race with seven goals after scoring in an eighth straight World Cup match.
Kylian Mbappe has six, while Erling Haaland and Harry Kane sit on five each.
Official tournament updates are available through FIFA.
