Facing a formidable opponent, the injury-depleted squad looks to see if the GWS Giants upset Fremantle Dockers this Saturday afternoon, July 4, 2026, at Manuka Oval in Canberra, a high-stakes clash where the underdogs desperately need to snap their recent slump and end the visitors' historic 14-game winning streak.
Backs to the Wall in Canberra
The atmosphere at training this week showed a team completely aware of the task ahead. Reporters on the boundary line noted a sharp focus during drills as coach Adam Kingsley addressed his squad.
"I'd imagine no one will give us a chance to beat them, so that creates an opportunity for us, and I'm sure our guys will attack it accordingly," Kingsley told reporters on Thursday.
Tactical Focus Points
Contest Control: The Giants must fix their slow starts after getting beaten early against Hawthorn last Friday night.
Limiting Supply: Stopping the Dockers from finding space out of the center bounces will be the primary defensive goal.
Maximizing Inside 50s: Efficient forward entries are mandatory to crack the league's tightest defense.
"Our game stands up. It's a finals brand when we execute it as well as we can. Clearly, we haven't been doing that over the last three games particularly, but we've seen patches where we've been able to do it. If we can deliver our best, then we'll certainly challenge Fremantle. In all phases, they're really strong and in good form. We're under no illusions; it's going to be a tough match. But at our best, we think we can beat anyone, and that's what we need to do."
Handling the Form Team
Fremantle's travelling supporters will lock out sections of Manuka Oval, building massive noise as they hunt a historic season. Kingsley knows his group has to absorb early pressure and shift game momentum through tough, physical tackles.
"They're obviously a really good team, and they're the form team," Kingsley said. "There will be opportunities that present themselves that we'll either take or we won't ... If we play to the best of our abilities, then we'll get plenty of opportunities. We've got to shut down their opportunities and maximise ours."
Selection Updates
Nick Madden: The 22-year-old ruckman returns via the VFL this weekend following a posterior cruciate ligament strain in his right knee.
Jack Buckley: The key defender remains out with a hamstring injury and is still a week or two away from senior selection.
"That's the nature of playing good teams - you probably don't get the same window to score, and they don't necessarily need a massive window to score themselves. You've got to be really on your game and at your best to compete against the best teams."
